Complex terms like “enzymes”, “carbon footprints” or “biofuels” can be difficult to grasp. To overcome this barrier, it is essential to present these concepts in an engaging and accessible way. Storytelling and interactive learning tools can simplify complex topics, ensuring that students not only understand but are excited to learn about them. RadicalZ and Micro4Biogas, two European research projects, have developed engaging, free resources to familiarize students with two key topics: enzymes and how they can contribute to a sustainable future, and the optimization of biogas production.
1. Molecular Explorers: Adventures in Green Science

Through this comic book, younger learners (ages 8 to 12) can engage with the concept of enzymes in a fun, easy-to-understand way. It follows the story of three kids and their enzymatic adventure. When this group of friends finds out the impact of human actions on the environment around them, they embark on a quest for answers that rapidly turn into an adventure. Their goal: seek out the powerful molecules that hold the key to solving the pollution problem. The comic is freely available in eight different languages and can be downloaded or read online – at no cost.

2. Engaging Older Students: The Digital Escape Room

This 45-minute hands-on activity challenges older students (ages 12 to 16) to solve puzzles while exploring how enzymes can help create sustainable industrial solutions. As young scientists, students take on the task of assisting industries like detergent and paper manufacturing in reducing pollution. They identify the right enzymes to transform toxic byproducts into eco-friendly products. 3. Learn How To Build a Biogas-Producing Biodigester

This activity is designed to introduce students to anaerobic digestion and biogas production. Thanks to this detailed step-by-step protocol, students will be able to build their own functioning biodigester. This can be built using materials widely available in hardware stores and will allow students to learn all the steps for biogas production. This resource includes a list of materials, step-by-step guide and a tutorial video.
